Fobs, remotes & smart keys

A new fob only works
once the car knows it.

“Key fob” covers a few different things: a key with the remote built into the head, a separate remote for the locks and trunk, or a push-to-start smart key the car senses in your pocket or bag. All of them have to be paired to the car — the buttons to the lock receiver and, on most modern cars, a chip the immobilizer has to recognize before the engine will start.

That pairing is the part people underestimate. A new fob doesn’t know your car until it’s programmed to it, and most smart keys also hide an emergency key blade that has to be cut to fit your door. We do the cutting and the programming at the car, then test every button and the start with you before we leave.

If every key is gone — fob included — the job is an all-keys-lost replacement; our lost car key replacement page walks through how that works.

  • Push-to-start & proximity smart keys
  • Remote key fobs for locks & trunk
  • Keys with a remote built into the head
  • Key blades cut for fobs, including laser-cut
  • Spare fobs added while one still works
  • Fobs replaced when every key is lost

How it works

From dead fob
to a car that starts.

  1. 01

    Tell us what you have

The year, make and model (or the VIN), whether the car is push-to-start, and whether you still have a working fob. That decides which fob your car takes and how it’s programmed — and it’s enough for a free quote on the phone.

  2. 02

    We come to the car

Home, work, an apartment lot or a parking garage — the tech handles it where the car is parked. Before programming, we’ll ask to see your ID and the registration.

  3. 03

    Cut & programmed

Any key blade is cut to your locks, and the fob is programmed to the car — the remote buttons and the chip the immobilizer needs to see before the engine starts.

  4. 04

    Tested with you

Lock, unlock, trunk, panic and the start. We check each one with you before we leave, and every working fob you handed us goes back in your hand.

Before you call

What to have ready

A few details let the dispatcher match the right fob to your car and quote it up front.

  • The VIN — on your registration, your insurance card, the dash at the base of the windshield and the driver’s door jamb.
  • The year, make and model, and whether the car is push-to-start.
  • Every fob or key you still have, working or not. On some cars, keys that aren’t present when a new one is programmed stop working, so bring them all.
  • A photo ID and the registration or title, so we can confirm the car is yours.
  • Where the car is parked, so the tech can get right to it.

Pricing

What affects the price

Fobs vary more than any other car key, so each one is quoted on its own. What moves the number:

  • The type: a lock remote, a key with a remote head or a push-to-start smart key.
  • Whether a working fob still exists — adding a spare is simpler than replacing the last one.
  • The year, make and model, which decide the fob and the programming steps.
  • Whether a key blade needs cutting, and whether it’s laser-cut.
  • How many fobs you want programmed on the visit.

The dispatcher quotes the exact job for free before the truck rolls, and the quote is what you pay — no trip fee, no surprises at the curb.

Mobile across Tampa Bay

Programmed where
the car is parked.

Fobs die and disappear everywhere: the office garage, an apartment lot near USF, the parking lot at Westfield Brandon. We program the replacement right there. For the city’s own neighborhoods, see our Tampa locksmith service page; the area links below cover the rest of the bay.

Locked out with the fob inside the car? That’s a lockout — our emergency locksmith line opens cars without damage, Monday through Saturday, 8am to 8pm.

FAQ

Quick answers about
key fob replacement & programming in Tampa.

Both. We replace remote key fobs, keys with a remote built into the head, and push-to-start proximity smart keys, and program each one to the car where it’s parked.

Not always. A weak battery is a common reason a fob gets unreliable, and many push-to-start cars will still start with a dead fob held against the start button or a marked spot — your owner’s manual shows where. If a fresh battery doesn’t fix it, or the fob is cracked, water-damaged or lost, that’s when replacement makes sense.

Usually, yes. Adding a fob while one still works is simpler than replacing the last one, and it keeps a lost fob from becoming an all-keys-lost call. It’s worth doing for a second driver, a new teen driver or a used car that came with a single fob.

Yes. That’s an all-keys-lost job — we cut any blade from the key code and program the new fob to the car on-site. Our lost car key replacement page explains what to have ready.
