Ignitions & stuck keys · Tampa, FL

Key stuck in the ignition? Tampa ignition repair & broken key extraction.

A key that won’t turn, won’t come out or snapped off in the ignition strands you just as surely as a lost one. We come to the car, work out whether the problem is the key, the ignition cylinder or something simpler, and fix it on-site — extracting broken pieces, repairing or replacing the ignition, and cutting a fresh key when the old one is worn out.

Why keys get stuck

Stuck, jammed or snapped —
it starts with a diagnosis.

A key usually sticks for one of a few reasons. The steering lock is engaged and pinning the cylinder. An automatic isn’t fully in Park, so the shift interlock won’t release the key. The key itself is worn smooth or bent after years on a heavy key ring. Or the wafers inside the ignition cylinder are worn, and the cylinder no longer turns or lets go of the key the way it should.

The first two you can often fix yourself — see the checklist below. The rest need a locksmith: a key broken off inside the cylinder, an ignition that won’t turn with any key, or a cylinder that’s worn out. Forcing it is how a stuck key becomes a broken key, and a broken key becomes a bigger repair.

We extract broken key pieces, repair or replace worn ignition cylinders, and cut a fresh key so you’re not back in the same spot next month. On cars with a chip in the key, the new key is programmed to the car before we leave.

How it works

From stuck key
to a clean start.

  1. 01

    Call and describe it

Tell the dispatcher what’s happening — won’t turn, won’t come out, or broken off — plus the year, make and model. That’s enough for a free quote on the phone.

  2. 02

    We come to the car

Driveway, parking garage or work lot. The car stays where it is — no tow to a shop.

  3. 03

    Diagnose & extract

We rule out the simple causes first — steering lock, shifter, the key itself — then remove any broken piece from the cylinder with extraction tools.

  4. 04

    Repair & a fresh key

If the cylinder is worn, we repair or replace it, cut a new key to match and program the chip if the car has one. Then we test the start and the key release with you.

Before you call

Safe things to try first

If the key is stuck but not broken, try these — gently. If none of them work, stop before anything snaps and call.

  • Turn the steering wheel slightly left and right while gently turning the key. That takes pressure off the steering lock.
  • Make sure an automatic is all the way in Park, then press the brake pedal. Some cars won’t release the key until the shifter is fully seated.
  • Check the battery. On some cars a dead battery keeps the shift interlock from releasing the key.
  • Don’t pull with pliers or force the key. A bent or snapped key is a much harder extraction than a stuck one.
  • If the key broke, keep the piece you still have — it helps us cut the new one.

Pricing

What affects the price

A stuck key can be a quick fix or a cylinder job, so each call is quoted on its own. What moves the number:

  • Whether the key is just stuck, or broken off inside the cylinder.
  • Whether the ignition cylinder needs repair or full replacement.
  • Whether the car uses a chip key that has to be programmed after a new key is cut.
  • The year, make and model of the car.

The dispatcher quotes the job for free before the truck rolls. If we find the cylinder needs more than expected, we tell you before doing the work — and the quote is what you pay.

FAQ

Quick answers about
ignition repair & broken key extraction in Tampa.

Usually the steering lock is engaged, the car isn’t fully in Park, or the key or the cylinder is worn. Wiggle the wheel gently while turning the key, confirm Park and press the brake. If it still won’t turn, call — forcing it risks snapping the key inside.

Yes. We extract the broken piece from the cylinder with extraction tools, check whether the ignition itself was damaged, and cut a new key — programmed to the car if it has a chip.

Sometimes just the key. A worn key can stick in a healthy cylinder, and a fresh key cut to the right code solves it. If the wafers inside the cylinder are worn, the ignition needs repair or replacement. We tell you which before we start.

Yes. Key extraction and ignition repair happen where the car is parked — at home, at work or in a parking lot.

Yes. The same extraction works on door and trunk locks, and we cut you a new key from the lock so you’re not left holding half a key.
